King’s College School Boat Club Supporters Association (KCSBCSA) is a lively and inclusive organisation formed in 1974 to support the rowers, their coaches, the Boat Club and the parents and other supporters.
In brief we aim to:-
- Support rowing events across the year
- Raise funds for equipment in addition to the significant amount contributed by the school (Rowing is a very expensive sport and it is worth noting that KCS is one of the few schools that does not charge rowing as an extra on the school fees)
- Provide social events for rowers and their supporters.
There are a large number of rowing events each year and these involve a huge amount of coordination by the School and our very dedicated team of coaches. The Supporter’s Association aims to help wherever it is needed and, in addition, to provide a place for parents and rowers to congregate and cheer on the KCS rowers. For example, our marquee at the National Schools Regatta in May provides such a focal point as well as a much needed constant supply of refreshment for the athletes, their coaches and of course their parents/supporters.
In addition, the Supporter’s Association raises money to provide many essential items for the Club. Although the school provides a significant budget to support rowing activities within the School, in order to help our athletes maintain their competitive edge, we raise funds to provide additional equipment. Many of the schools we compete against have much deeper pockets that KCS or they charge rowers significant additional fees for participating in the sport. By raising the funds we can provide invaluable additional support.
There is a small annual subscription for membership of the KCSBCSA and as the parent of a rower this will be invoiced to you as part of the school fees invoice at the start of the summer term.
Take time to look at the many social events involving supporters, from Quiz Nights to Festive Racing at Christmas (mulled wine on tap for the grown-ups). Don’t worry if you haven’t met many parents yet as we aim to bring people together not only within their own year groups but across the whole rowing community. The highlight of our rowing calendar is the annual Boat Club Dinner; a superb black tie event which brings everyone together to celebrate the years achievements. We have been lucky enough to persuade speakers such as Mo Sbihi, Tom James and Paul Bennett to join us and share their Olympic experiences.
The Boathouse is used by the Cambridge University Boatclub each year as their base for preparing for the Boat Race and the Supporters provide hospitality and catering for the their Trial VIII’s as they prepare for the big day. Not only is this great fun to become involved in but it also gives great benefits to our boys who have the chance to observe at close quarters some of the best rowers in the country.
The Supporters Association is always in need of additional helpers and getting involved is fun and rewarding. Seeing a friendly face on the towpath while waiting for a glimpse of your son or daughter makes it all worth while!
